This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay takes you on an eye-opening, heart-wrenching, and often hysterical journey through the gruelling life of a junior doctor working in the NHS. The book is based on Kay's private diaries, penned during endless shifts, sleepless nights, and missed weekends, revealing the raw realities of a profession that is both incredibly demanding and deeply rewarding.

From chaotic days filled with unexpected emergencies to the quiet moments of triumph and despair, Adam Kay shares a candid and unfiltered account of the trials and tribulations faced by medical professionals. Readers are immersed in an environment where life-and-death decisions are made under immense pressure, all while dealing with a relentless influx of patients and the often absurd challenges of hospital bureaucracy. Through his witty and incisive writing, Kay manages to turn his experiences into a narrative that is not only enlightening but also deeply engaging.

The book highlights the physical and emotional toll exacted on healthcare workers, offering a poignant reflection on their unyielding dedication and resilience. Despite the serious subject matter, Kay's dark humour and sharp observations bring levity to the narrative, making it both an entertaining and thought-provoking read.

The accolades for This is Going to Hurt are well-deserved. It was the Sunday Times Number One Bestseller for over eight months and won an unprecedented four National Book Awards, including Book of the Year, Non-Fiction Book of the Year, New Writer of the Year, and the Zoe Ball Book Club Book of the Year. Stephen Fry aptly describes it as being 'painfully funny,' with the pain and the funniness combining to create something profoundly good, noble, and loveable.

This special edition includes additional diary entries and a new afterword by the author, offering even more insights and reflections. Adam Kay’s poignant and hilarious memoir is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the vulnerability, strength, and humanity behind the healthcare profession.
