The Xinjiang Emergency
This volume investigates the mass detention of Uyghurs in China, exploring the regimes of surveillance to which they are subjected both inside and outside the detention centres of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It offers new insights into the future of the CCP's domestic governance strategies and troubling international behaviour.
The Xinjiang Emergency delves into the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region's current crisis, which is the largest mass repression of an ethnic and/or religious minority in the world today. Since 2016, researchers estimate that one million people have been detained there without trial.
Inside the detention centres, individuals are subjected to deeply invasive surveillance and psychological stress. Outside these centres, more than ten million Turkic Muslim minorities endure a network of hi-tech surveillance systems, checkpoints, and interpersonal monitoring.
Existing reportage and commentary often address these issues in isolation. However, this ground-breaking volume brings them together, exploring the interconnections between the core strands of the Xinjiang emergency. By doing so, it provides a more accurate understanding of the mass detentions' significance for the future of President Xi Jinping's China.
