The Tuscan Daughter by Tessa Harris deftly intertwines the turbulent times of World War II with a poignant tale of courage, love, and resilience.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Tuscany in 1942, the story follows Lizzie Thornton, an Englishwoman who finds herself in the enchanting city of Lucca just before the war erupts. Lizzie passionately serves as a tutor to the young Cristo, the son of Count Antonio de Falco, a prominent fascist and fervent supporter of Mussolini. As Lizzie revels in her idyllic life in Tuscany, her tranquillity is suddenly shattered when war is declared, and she becomes perceived as an enemy in the country she holds dear.

Everything changes with the arrival of Vincenzo Baldini, the new tutor, who harbours his own secrets. Vincenzo is, in fact, an active member of the Italian resistance, clandestinely publishing an anti-fascist propaganda magazine. Drawn to Vincenzo’s cause, Lizzie becomes deeply involved in the resistance movement, soon finding herself profoundly in love. However, as Lizzie's commitment to the cause intensifies, someone from her past emerges, threatening to upend her newfound life and challenging her resolve to fight for what and whom she truly desires.

Inspired by true events, The Tuscan Daughter is a stirring, heart-wrenching narrative that brilliantly captures one woman's steadfast resilience in the face of fascism. It is a must-read for enthusiasts of historical fiction, especially those who admire tales of bravery and undying spirit during WWII. Fans of authors like Mandy Robotham and Kate Quinn will be especially captivated by this richly woven novel.
