The Spatiality and Temporality of Urban Violence

Histories, Rhythms and Ruptures
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
The Spatiality and Temporality of Urban Violence explores how the city's spatial and temporal structures influence the occurrence and nature of violence. This edited volume considers violence as a spatiotemporal practice that not only happens within urban environments but also actively shapes and transforms those environments over time, including through the role of memory. By linking space and time analytically, the book offers new perspectives on urban violence through diverse case studies spanning various regions and historical periods, challenging traditional distinctions between global North and South, past and present.

Book Hero thinking about your next read

This interdisciplinary edited volume studies practices and representations of urban violence from a spatiotemporal perspective. It discusses how the spatial and temporal characteristics of the urban can produce and shape violence, and how practices as well as memories of violence transform spatialities and temporalities of cities.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The Spatiality and Temporality of Urban Violence is an edited volume that explores how the city, with its spatial and temporal configuration and rhythms, produces and shapes violence. This examination considers both the built environment and particular 'urban' social relations.

The book builds on the insight that violence itself is a spatiotemporal practice with generative capacities, which produces and transforms urban space and time in the long term, also through the impact of memory. The analytical categories of space and time must be thought as inextricably linked with each other. Expanding this fundamental conceptual idea offers fresh perspectives on urban violence.

The book unites case studies on different world regions and historical periods, challenging assumed binaries of cities in the global North and South, and the past and present.
