A study of the principal leader of Palestinian nationalism during the British mandate and one of the Arab world's controversial figures. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
Muhammad Amin al-Husayni, the principal leader of Palestinian nationalism during the British mandate, was one of the modern Arab world's most controversial figures. He played a role in the 1992 Wailing Wall disturbance, took part in the Iraqi revolt of 1941, and was the target of British and Zionist assasins during World War II. Philip Mattar now offers the first full-length biography of this intriguing figure.
The Mufti of Jerusalem by Philip Mattar provides a comprehensive and objective look into the life of Muhammad Amin al-Husayni, a leading figure in Palestinian nationalism during the British mandate. Al-Husayni emerged as one of the modern Arab world's most controversial figures due to his involvement in significant events such as the 1929 Wailing Wall disturbance and the Iraqi revolt of 1941. He was also notably targeted by British and Zionist assassins during World War II.
In this first full-length biography, Mattar presents a fresh and revised account of al-Husayni, shedding light on his influence in Palestinian politics during the mandate era and the broader Palestinian national movement. The book explores his ascent to religious authority as Mufti of Jerusalem and head of the Supreme Muslim Council.
Mattar identifies two major phases in al-Husayniβs career. The first phase, from 1917 to 1936, characterises him as a cautious and pragmatic leader who, despite opposing Zionism, engaged with the British mandatory officials. The second phase, beginning in 1936, reveals a shift to militancy, marked by increasing frustration and eventual failure.
