The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill: Alone, 1932-1940 by William Manchester is a masterful biography that delves into one of the most tumultuous periods of both World War II history and Winston Churchill’s life. This gripping volume, the second in Manchester's acclaimed trilogy, highlights Churchill's battle against the tide of appeasement in the years leading up to and the early days of World War II.

At a time when much of the world sought to placate the growing threat of Nazi Germany, Churchill faced scepticism and resistance from his own nation. With his relentless spirit and unyielding determination, he stood unwavering, warning Parliament of the looming danger with unmatched foresight. This period encapsulates the essence of Churchill's heroism—a solitary fight for a moral cause, ultimately leading to his recognition as a crucial leader against fascism. Manchester paints a vivid picture of a man who, despite being politically sidelined, never capitulated to the pressures of public opinion, unwavering in his belief that standing against tyranny was the only path to safeguard the future.

Manchester's deep insight and engaging narrative bring to life Churchill's formidable character and the tumult of the era. His portrayal suggests that Churchill's resilience and defiance were as significant as his wartime leadership. Manchester compellingly argues that Churchill's lonely stance against appeasement was, in many respects, his finest hour, presaging his pivotal role in rallying the Allied efforts that ultimately defeated Hitler.

The narrative is described as "Memorable" by the San Francisco Chronicle, while the Boston Sunday Globe finds it "Stirring," highlighting how this period marked a pivotal moment in Churchill's illustrious career.

Noting its grand historical style, The Washington Post calls the book "Vivid... history in the grand manner," and The Times in London remarks simply, "Compelling reading."

Continuing the legacy of its predecessor, this volume is deemed "A triumph... equal in stature to the first volume of the series" by Newsday, ensuring its place as a significant contribution to Churchillian scholarship and historical literature.
