In 1975, twelve-year-old Amir is determined to win the local kite-fighting tournament, an event held in high regard in his hometown of Kabul. With the faithful Hassan by his side, Amir feels confident in their chances. However, an unforeseen tragedy involving Hassan on the day of the tournament irrevocably alters their paths. This incident seeds a deep-seated guilt that plagues Amir long after his family's escape from the Soviet invasion into a new life in America.

Even in the relative safety and comfort of the United States, the shadows of his past loom large over Amir. Struggling with his conscience and striving to connect with his father, Amir can never fully escape the memories of what he left behind. As the political landscape of Afghanistan shifts dramatically with the rise of Taliban rule, Amir feels the pull of his homeland and realises he must return.

In seeking redemption, Amir embarks on a perilous journey back to a place ravaged by conflict and terror. His mission is not only to face the demons of his past but to make amends for the wrongs committed during his childhood. Through this compelling and richly crafted narrative, Hosseini delves into the complexities of forgiveness and the enduring power of friendship.

The Kite Runner has captured the hearts of millions worldwide with its deeply poignant and emotionally charged storytelling. Khaled Hosseini's debut novel is a powerful exploration of guilt, redemption, and the ties that bind us. It promises to leave an indelible mark on all who read it.
