The Invitation by Stacey May Fowles is a debut picture book that presents a whimsical, warmhearted story exploring how a super-special surprise can lead to anxiety, or alternatively, invite imagination.

On a beautiful fall day, Fern finds an envelope in her mailbox. With much apprehension about its contents, her friend Fawn encourages her to open it. Inside, she discovers an invitation to a super-special surprise at the museumโ€”but Fern does not like surprises!

Fortunately, Fawn offers to accompany her to the party. He reassures her by asking, "What could possibly happen?" As they journey together, Fern shares her worries: What if they can't make it in time? What if they don't know anyone there?

Fawn playfully adopts Fern's way of thinking, gently suggesting imaginative twists to her narrative and introducing a fun new cast of characters: the chipmunk who could show them a shortcut, the grumpy bear who could clear their path, and the brave dentist who might treat the bear's toothache. Eventually, they arrive, allowing Fern to relish the wonderful surprise surrounding her.

Marie Lafranceโ€™s delightfully dreamy illustrations vividly bring the imagined world of Fern and Fawn to life in this super-special story about catastrophic thinking.
