The Hitler Years: Triumph 1933 - 1939 by Frank McDonough presents the compelling and comprehensive first volume of a two-part narrative history chronicling the rise and fall of the Nazi regime. Authored by a leading expert on the Third Reich, the book meticulously details Adolf Hitler's ascension to power and the subsequent establishment of his totalitarian regime.

On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler became the German Chancellor, appointed by President Hindenburg to lead a coalition government. Within mere months, Hitler transformed this position of power into a dictatorship, ruthlessly eliminating his left-wing opponents through imprisonment and murder, and terrorising the broader population. Jews were systematically driven out of public life as Hitler's regime commenced. His administration revitalised the economy through a programme of militaristic Keynesianism, characterised by massive public works, vast armaments spending and the unilateral cancellation of foreign debts. This resurgence provided a stark contrast to the grim realities of the Great Depression, presenting a vision of a reborn and assertively powerful Germany.

From 1933 to 1939, Hitler succeeded in swaying the German populace towards his vision of a renewed Reich. This period of domestic triumph saw him engage in cunning political manoeuvres, leveraging neighbouring powers against each other while patiently consolidating his strength. His ultimate aim was realised through the comprehensive military defeat of Poland in 1939. However, Hitler's relentless pursuit of war as a means of achieving greatness, along with his fanatical racism, was to be the inherent flaw that would ultimately lead to his regime's downfall.

In The Hitler Years, McDonough addresses the multifaceted aspects of Hitler’s rule, from the regime's economic policies and social transformations to its brutal oppression and international strategies. Through detailed research and narrative prowess, McDonough provides a masterclass in the history of Nazi Germany, offering readers profound insights into this dark chapter of history.

What distinguishes this volume is not only its authoritative historical analysis but also its stylish design. The book is enriched with over 80 coloured photographs, providing visual context that enhances the reader's understanding of the era. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that The Hitler Years: Triumph 1933 - 1939 is not only a scholarly resource but also an engaging and accessible read for anyone interested in this pivotal period.

Described as "one of the books of the year" by Dan Snow and hailed as "a masterclass in the history of Nazi Germany" by Get History, McDonough’s work stands out for its detailed research and nuanced portrayal of the events leading up to World War II. Military History commends its "stylish design and more than 80 coloured photographs" which aid in immersing the reader in the historical context.

This first volume of The Hitler Years is an essential addition to the library of any history enthusiast or scholar, offering a thorough and chilling exploration of Hitler's rise to power and the early years of the Nazi regime.
