The Shipping Container and Freight Transportation
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
The Globalization of American Infrastructure explores how the U.S. freight transportation system has been transformed since the 1950s by the introduction of the shipping container. This globally standardised container connects shipping, trucking, and railroads to form a near seamless worldwide logistics network. The book details how this network integrates with national infrastructures shaped by historical and geographical contexts, focusing on American railroads, trucking, inland waterways, and container transfer terminals. It combines a detailed historical narrative with theoretical insights from infrastructure and globalization studies.

This book gives an account of how the U.S. freight transportation system has been impacted and globalized since the 1950s, by the presence of the shipping container. A globally standardised object, the container carries cargo moving in international trade, and it utilises and fits within the existing transportation infrastructures of shipping, trucking and railways. In this way, it binds them together into a nearly seamless worldwide logistics network.

This process occurs not only in ocean shipping and at ports but also deep within national territories. In its dependence on existing infrastructural systems, though, the network of container movement as it pervades domestic space is shaped by the history and geography of the nation-state. This global network is not invariably imposed in a top-down mannerβ€”to a large degree, it is cobbled together out of national, regional and local systems.

The Globalization of American Infrastructure by Matthew Heins describes this in the American context, examining the freight transportation infrastructures of railways, trucking and inland waterways, and also the terminals where containers are transferred between train and truck. The book provides a detailed historical narrative, and is also theoretically informed by the contemporary literature on infrastructure and globalisation.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Reviewed for its insightful analysis, the book unpacks freight shipping as a complex product of political, social, and economic systems rather than a simple technological innovation. It challenges narratives of smooth, technical logistics and highlights the continuity between earlier transport methods and containerisation. The author critically explores multiscalar power dynamics and the path-dependent nature of infrastructure change, providing a nuanced perspective on how globalization manifests at local and national levels. This work is valued in critical logistics and globalization literature.
