The Glass Hotel

The New York Times bestselling novel, from the author of Station Eleven.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel elegantly intertwines the lives of characters caught in the ripple effects of two major, yet disparate, tragedies. The novel begins at the exclusive Hotel Caiette, where Vincent, a stunningly beautiful bartender, meets New York financier Jonathan Alkaitis. Their encounter sets the stage for a complex narrative that navigates through the illusions of wealth and the despair of financial ruin.

As their relationship unfolds, a mysterious message is scrawled on the glass wall of the Hotel Caiette: "Why don’t you swallow broken glass." This cryptic act of vandalism disrupts the lives of many, including Leon Prevant, a shipping executive who witnesses the unsettling message. This moment becomes a prelude to a much larger catastrophe - the unveiling of Alkaitis's investment fund as a colossal Ponzi scheme.

In the aftermath, Leon loses his retirement savings, while Vincent appears to have emerged unscathed. However, a decade later, her life takes a perilous turn when she vanishes from the deck of one of Leon's ships, plunging the reader into a gripping exploration of loss and the quest for redemption.

Mandel's narrative brilliance is evident as she weaves an intriguing plot filled with haunting elegance and evocative imagery. Themes of moral ambiguity, the fragility of human connections, and the profound impact of individual actions are artfully threaded throughout the story.

'Terrific' – Sunday Times

I judged a book by its cover and wasn’t dissapointed

Literally only bought this book because I liked the title and the cover and the thought of a glass hotel by a lake. Reader - the book did not dissapoint and I discovered a new favourite author. A compelling read and an incredible demonstration writing craft. Highly recommend.
