The Femininity Puzzle

Gender, Orientalism and the Jewish Other
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
In the Hobsbawmian long 19th century, The Femininity Puzzle by Ulrike Brunotte examines how gender, sexualization, and feminization were central to constructing the Jewish Other. Through exploring literature, psychoanalysis, and performing arts, the book reveals the ambivalence of racialised stereotypes. It highlights two key themes: the effeminization of the male Jew in antisemitic discourse, and the transgressive femininity associated with Jewish women, especially the Orientalised figure of the Beautiful Jewess.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In the Hobsbawmian long 19th century, gender and processes of sexualization and feminization have been crucial in the construction of the Jewish Other. Ulrike Brunotte explores how these processes came about by addressing imaginative, aesthetic, and epistemological questions.

She analyzes how literature, psychoanalysis and the performing arts traverse and react to the ambivalence of racialized stereotypes. The femininity puzzle presents itself in two ways: first in the role of effeminization of the male Jew in antisemitic discourse, and then in the transgressive forms of femininity connected to Jewish women, especially the allosemitic Orientalization in the figure of the Beautiful Jewess.
