Summary

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers: Grass Roots and Other Follies follows Freewheelin' Franklin, Phineas, and Fat Freddy as they embark on hilarious misadventures, from scoring sinsemilla and forming a softball league to adopting a cunning parakeet and unwittingly housing undercover cops. The title story depicts their move to the countryside to reconnect with nature, only to find it less welcoming than expected, while Fat Freddy's Cat thrives outdoors. A bonus tale features the cat leading a quirky animal rights escapade called "Animal Camp."

This volume is the third in a seven-part series compiling the complete Freak Brothers comics, meticulously restored for the first North American hardcover editions in over thirty years.

The third release in our Freak Brothers Follies series follows the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers back to their hippie origins!

Description

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers - Freewheelin' Franklin, Phineas, and Fat Freddy - score some sinsemilla from a country cousin, start a softball league to score free drinks, adopt a possessed parakeet that outwits the D.E.A., and inadvertently take in a couple of undercover cops as housemates! The title story collects an epic that ran for over six months in newspapers, in which the Brothers, evicted from their apartment, move to the country to get back to nature - only to discover that nature doesn't want them! Meanwhile, Fat Freddy's Cat adapts much more readily to outdoor living. Then, in a bonus tale, the cat leads the way in the accidental animal rights adventure, "Animal Camp."

Grass Roots and Other Follies is the third release in this special series of seven volumes compiling the complete Freak Brothers comic adventures. The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics have sold more than 45 million copies worldwide in 16 languages, and these painstakingly restored hardcovers are the first North American bookshelf editions in more than thirty years.

The Freak Brothers, the popular animated series currently streaming on Tubi - and renewed for season 2, set to release in December 2022 - stars Woody Harrelson, Pete Davidson, John Goodman, and Tiffany Haddish.

About the Author

Gilbert Shelton (b. 1940, Dallas, Texas), a founding father of the underground comix movement, is the creator of the iconic comix characters The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Fat Freddy's Cat, and Wonder Wart-Hog. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 2012. He has been known to sing and play piano for the Blum Brothers, a Paris-based rhythm and blues group. He lives in Paris, France, with his wife and an ever-changing number of cats. Paul Mavrides (b. 1952), an enigmatic cartoonist, painter, and graphic artist, began collaborating with Gilbert Shelton on The Freak Brothers in 1978. He is a founding member of the Church of the SubGenius. In 1997, after a six-year legal battle, he won a landmark decision for artists' rights in California that established a legal equivalency between written-word authors and cartoonists. Dave Sheridan (1943 - 1982) was an American cartoonist and underground comix artist. He was the creator of Dealer McDope and Tales from the Leather Nun and collaborated with Gilbert Shelton and Paul Mavrides on The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers.
