The Denniston Rose by Jenny Pattrick is a compelling tale set in a 19th century coal-mining settlement, high on a desolate plateau above New Zealand's rugged West Coast. This evocative novel weaves the story of five-year-old Rose and her mother, as they navigate the harsh realities and isolation of their new life in Denniston.

In a community brimming with hardship, suspicion, and resilience, Rose's arrival sparks curiosity and whispers among the townsfolk. Her mother, seen as desperate and ostracised, chooses a hard life entwined with the notorious drunkard, Jimmy Cork. Despite the cold reception, Rose’s spirit and strength become a beacon of hope and endurance, illustrating her struggle for survival and understanding in a place so relentless and unforgiving.

This number one bestseller poignantly captures the essence of human resilience in the face of adversity. Pattrick's rich storytelling and vivid characters paint a portrait of life in Denniston that resonates with historical authenticity and emotional depth. The rugged landscape and the community’s raw existence are brought to life through her meticulous research and lyrical prose.

The Denniston Rose has been re-released in the Popular Penguin format to celebrate 50 years of publishing in New Zealand. Penguin Books, established in 1935 by Allen Lane, was founded on the principle of providing high-quality, affordable books to a broad readership.
