The Cultural Revolution

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description
Acclaimed by the Daily Mail as 'definitive and harrowing', this is the final volume of ‘The People’s Trilogy', begun by the Samuel Johnson prize-winning Mao's Great Famine.

The Cultural Revolution by Frank Dikötter meticulously examines one of the most turbulent and destructive periods in modern Chinese history. Taking place between 1966 and 1976, the Cultural Revolution was an attempt by an ageing Mao Zedong to reassert his ideology and solidify his legacy. Facing dissent and perceived threats to his power, Mao mobilised the nation's youth into a fervent campaign aiming to eradicate capitalist influences and enforce strict adherence to communist doctrines.

However, the Cultural Revolution soon spiralled into a period of unprecedented chaos and violence. The Red Guards, composed chiefly of zealous students, were dispatched to root out alleged bourgeois elements within society. What started as a movement against capitalist infiltration quickly devolved into fractious infighting among rival factions, leading to street battles conducted with semi-automatic weapons, causing widespread social disintegration.

As public order disintegrated, the People's Liberation Army intervened, transforming China into a militarized state characterized by brutal purges. Betrayals, public humiliations, imprisonments, and torture became the order of the day, with the gruesome violence eliminating nearly one in fifty people. Ironically, the very forces intended to instil revolutionary purity fell victim to the same paranoid purges, highlighting the devastating internal contradictions of the movement.

In the face of institutional collapse, ordinary citizens seized the opportunity to subtly defy the regime. Through their resilience and ingenuity, they managed to subvert Maoist doctrines, sparking a silent counter-revolution that ultimately undermined the very fabric of Mao's vision. Within this turmoil, people began undoing collectivisation and quietly reviving economic practices that had long been suppressed.

Dikötter's narrative is grounded in extensive archival research and in-depth personal interviews, offering an unvarnished portrayal of the individual human experience amidst systemic brutality. Unlike conventional depictions that paint the Cultural Revolution as an era of uniform conformity, Dikötter delves into the complex personal choices and acts of defiance that characterised this decade of widespread torment and fear.

Written with unprecedented access to classified party documents, including secret police reports and unexpurgated versions of leadership speeches, The Cultural Revolution is a monumental reassessment of the People's Republic of China's most tumultuous era. This third chapter in Frank Dikötter's extraordinarily lucid and groundbreaking 'People's Trilogy' provides a devastating critique of Mao's final years in power, offering fresh insights into how decollectivisation from below emerged as an unintended consequence of political repression and state violence.
