In The Communist Hypothesis, Alain Badiou reasserts communism as a vital and necessary political concept. Challenging prevailing acceptance of market economies and parliamentary democracy, he offers a radical critique of inequality and capitalist governance. Originally presented in 2008, Badiou’s work is a compelling call for universal emancipation and a reimagining of the Left’s future, making it essential reading for those invested in political thought and the fate of the planet.

We know that communism is the right hypothesis. All those who abandon this hypothesis immediately resign themselves to the market economy. This title presents a hypothesis that is partly a demand to reconceptualize communism after the twin deaths of the Soviet Union and neoliberalism, and also a demand for universal emancipation.

A new program for the Left by the inimitable Marxist theorist

We know that communism is the right hypothesis. All those who abandon this hypothesis immediately resign themselves to the market economy, to parliamentary democracy – the form of state suited to capitalism – and to the inevitable and "natural" character of the most monstrous inequalities. Alain Badiou

Alain Badiou's communist hypothesis, first stated in 2008, cut through the cant and compromises of the past twenty years to reconceptualize the Left. The hypothesis is a fresh demand for universal emancipation and a galvanizing call to arms. Anyone concerned with the future of the planet needs to reckon with the ideas outlined within this book.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Described as a Little Red Book for contemporary times by Platypus, Badiou's work draws intellectual lineage from Sartre and Althusser, with New Statesman noting this heritage. Slavoj Žižek praises it profoundly, likening Badiou to Plato or Hegel, and the Times Higher Education Supplement highlights its provocative challenge to Western liberal democracy.
