In the early autumn of 1958, the notorious Olympia Press in Paris published a novel entitled Candy, an erotic, Rabelaisian satire loosely based on Voltaire's Candide. Written by Maxwell Kenton, the pseudonym for co-authors Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg, the novel drew the attention of the French censors. It was banned, reissued by Olympia's intrepid publisher under the title Lollipop, re-banned, and then reissued once more.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Critics praise The Candy Men as both a fascinating biography of a controversial book and a lively epistolary portrait of its authors. Peter Matthiessen highlights the anarchic humour and imaginative flair captured in the authors' correspondence, while the New York Times calls it a "highly successful example" of book biography. Publishers Weekly commends its insight into Beat culture and the literary scene, finding it sometimes more readable than the original novel.
