Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler

Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler explores the life of American artist Flora Mayo, who was romantically linked to Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti in the 1920s. While Giacometti gained lasting fame, Mayo’s own work was destroyed and her story largely forgotten. This art project reanimates her biography from a feminist viewpoint, blending reconstruction and documentation into a rich, multilayered narrative. The catalogue accompanies the current exhibition at Sammlung Goetz and details the artists’ extensive research and the installation itself.

The work originally conceived by the artist couple Hubbard / Birchler for the Swiss Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale re-constructs the life story of the American artist Flora Mayo. Mayo had a romantic relationship in the 1920s with the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. While he is now one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century, her work was destroyed, and her life forgotten.

Hubbard / Birchler reanimate Mayo's compelling biography from a feminist perspective, combining reconstruction and documentation to create a multilayered form of narrative. The catalogue, produced for the current exhibition at the Sammlung Goetz, elucidates the research the artists engaged in and documents the installation in an impressive manner.
