Shadows of Time explores the life and work of Giambologna (1529 - 1606), hailed as the most significant European sculptor in the period between Michelangelo and Bernini. How did he rise to such a prestigious position?

This volume delves into this fascinating question, focusing particularly on Giambologna's study of Michelangelo, his dominant role model, and how he successfully rose to prominence.

The young Flemish artist, Giambologna, likely began his study trip to Rome in 1550. On his return journey, he visited Florence, chose to stay, and quickly became a prominent figure at the Medici court. His sculptures were sent to princely courts across Europe, becoming highly coveted gifts.

Despite knowing much about his success, there is little information about his early years in Italy, as he first emerged as a notable sculptor around 1560. The alabaster figures inspired by Michelangelo's "Times of Day" in Dresden, previously largely overlooked, are considered early works by this master sculptor. Examining these sculptures promises to cast fresh light on the development of a genius.
