Sebastião Salgado. Amazônia showcases the unparalleled beauty of the Brazilian Amazon, a region that Sebastião Salgado photographed over six years, capturing its irreplaceable treasure for humanity. The book is a testament to the forest, the rivers, the mountains, and the people who inhabit this extraordinary area.

Salgado's journey led him to visit a dozen indigenous tribes living in small communities within the largest tropical rainforest in the world. He documented the daily life of tribes such as the Yanomami, the Asháninka, the Yawanawá, the Suruwahá, the Zo'é, the Kuikuro, the Waurá, the Kamayurá, the Korubo, the Marubo, the Awá, and the Macuxi. The book beautifully depicts their warm family bonds, hunting and fishing practices, the preparation and sharing of meals, and their remarkable talent for painting their faces and bodies. It also highlights the significance of their shamans, dances, and rituals.

Salgado has dedicated this work to the indigenous peoples of Brazil's Amazon region. He expresses his heartfelt wish, "with all my energy, with all the passion I possess, is that in 50 years' time this book will not resemble a record of a lost world. Amazônia must live on."

Founded in 1998 in Aimorés, Minas Gerais, Instituto Terra embodies Lélia Wanick Salgado and Sebastião Salgado's lifelong activism and cultural documentation. Through a scientific program of planting and raising saplings, the organization has achieved a miraculous reforestation of the once infertile region. This initiative supports the Salgados' mission to reverse environmental damage. TASCHEN is proud of its carbon zero status, achieved through continued partnership with Instituto Terra.
