Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Mistral is a stunning portrait of Provence shaped by its legendary wind, the mistral. Photographer Rachel Cobb captures the invisible force that sweeps down the Rhône Valley with gusts sometimes reaching hurricane strength. This wind influences every aspect of Provençal life—from architecture with few windows on windward sides, to agriculture where tree windbreaks protect crops, and the clear skies that inspire artists. Through evocative images—a leaf in flight, grapevines battered by gusts, a bride tangled in her veil, and wind-resistant spider webs—Cobb makes the unseen palpable. Accompanied by an introduction by Bill Buford and a literary excerpt from Paul Auster, plus writings by Jean Giono and Frédéric Mistral, this book intertwines photography, culture, and nature in a beautifully designed volume.

Mistral is a portrait of Provence seen through its legendary wind. Photographer Rachel Cobb illustrates the effects of this relentless force of nature that funnels down France's Rhône Valley, sometimes gusting to hurricane strength.

The mistral is not just a weather phenomenon: it is an integral part of the fabric of Provençal life impacting its architecture, agriculture, landscape, and culture. Houses have few or no windows on the northwest, windward side and the main entrance on the southern, sheltered side. Rows of trees lining fields create windbreaks to shield crops. Artists have long been drawn to the area for the clear skies that follow a mistral.

Nobody who lives or spends time in the region can escape the mistral. It is everywhere yet nowhere to be seen. How do you photograph the wind? With images of a leaf caught in flight, grapevines lashed by powerful gusts ("You can taste the wine better when there's a mistral," a winemaker says), a bride tangled in her veil, and even spider webs oriented to withstand the wind. Out of thin air, Cobb makes us feel the unseen.

Including an introduction by Bill Buford and an excerpt from Paul Auster about his life in Provence, Cobb draws from writing by Jean Giono, Frédéric Mistral and others. The book is designed by Yolanda Cuomo Design, NYC.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Critics praise Mistral as a deeply moving, playful collection of images that achieves the near-impossible task of photographing the invisible wind. W. Scott Olsen of LensCulture calls it "among those great photobooks that provoke a creative imagining in the viewer's heart and head" and suggests it is an "instant classic." The Guardian highlights Cobb's decades-long dedication to capturing this relentless natural force integral to Provençal life. Vogue describes the work as lush, vibrant, and resonant with the intensity of the mistral's power.
