Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Pia Ferm (Bilingual edition) is the first monograph presenting an in-depth look at Swedish artist Pia Ferm's distinctive approach to art. It showcases her marble sculptures alongside her tufted tapestries, which retain visible traces of their origins in sketches and watercolour drawings. The abstract patterns of her tapestries evoke painting more than traditional tapestry, aptly described as "woven drawing." The book explores Ferm's challenge to artistic boundaries, examining when a work transitions between sculpture and painting. Extensive visual material complements insightful texts on her creative process.

Book Hero thinking about your next read

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The first monograph by Swedish artist Pia Ferm provides a comprehensive overview of both her marble sculptures and tufted tapestries. These are created from sketches and watercolour drawings, though their drawing origins remain visible in the hand-worked wool surfaces.

The abstract patterns of these works are more reminiscent of paintings than of classic tapestries—thus the term "woven drawing" unquestionably fits Ferm's distinctive works. The artist is concerned with breaking down genre boundaries: When does a work of art cross the status from sculpture to painting, or vice versa?

In addition to extensive visual material, the monograph contains texts on the artist's working methods.

    The Iliad
When Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017—revealing the ancient poem in a contemporary idiom that was "fresh, unpretentious and lean" (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)—critics lauded it as "a revelation" (Susan Chira, New York Times) and "a cultural landmark" (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an...
