Ours Was the Shining Future by David Leonhardt offers a compelling exploration of the modern American economy, tracing its journey from the Great Depression to the present day's Great Stagnation. Through a clear-eyed and authoritative narrative, Leonhardt delves into the roots of the so-called "American Dream" and examines how the nation's economic landscape experienced both remarkable growth and troubling decline. Using his extensive experience as a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The New York Times, Leonhardt provides a thorough and insightful analysis of why the dream of a happier, healthier, and more prosperous future has become increasingly elusive for many Americans.

Two decades into the twenty-first century, the stagnation of living standards has become a defining trend of American life. Life expectancy has declined, economic inequality has soared, and the Black-white wage gap has alarmingly reverted to levels reminiscent of the 1950s. In Ours Was the Shining Future, Leonhardt explores the systemic factors and pivotal moments in history that have led to this economic disparity. He posits that the American economy has been shaped by an ongoing battle between two competing forms of capitalism: one fostering collective prosperity and another favouring individual wealth at the expense of the broader population.

Leonhardt's vivid prose brings to life both the successes and failures of American democratic capitalism. He introduces readers to trailblazing figures such as Frances Perkins, Paul Hoffman, Cesar Chavez, Robert Kennedy, A. Philip Randolph, and Grace Hopper, who played crucial roles in shaping the economic landscape and advocating for grassroots democratic movements. These stories of innovation, grit, and human drama illuminate how democratic capitalism once made the American Dream attainable and how its gradual corruption has shifted advantage to the privileged few.

The book is not only a rich historical account but also a beacon of hope. Leonhardt argues that, just as Americans have transformed their economy in the past, there is potential to revive the American Dream once more. By committing to systemic changes and leveraging the power of grassroots movements across the political spectrum, there remains the possibility of achieving a more equitable and prosperous future.

Ours Was the Shining Future is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the economic forces that have shaped modern America and the prospects for reclaiming the promised prosperity that once defined the nation's identity. This sweeping narrative is filled with both cautionary tales and inspiring stories, making it a must-read for those interested in the intersection of economics, history, and social justice.
