Neither Here, Nor There

Bill Bryson’s first travel book, The Lost Continent, was unanimously acclaimed as one of the funniest books in years.

Bill Bryson's second, achingly funny travel book, retracing his own steps as a student backpacking through Europe, twenty years later.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In Neither Here, Nor There, Bill Bryson takes readers on an insightful and laugh-out-loud journey across Europe, recounting his adventures and misadventures with trademark wit and humour. This entertaining travelogue sees Bryson retracing the steps of his youthful travels as a student, but now with the wisdom (and perhaps cynicism) of middle age. Starting from the northern reaches of Hammerfest, the world's northernmost town, he winds his way down to vibrant Istanbul, a city that straddles the border between Europe and Asia.

As he travels from country to country, Bryson's humorous and often caustic observations offer a fresh perspective on European culture and idiosyncrasies. Whether he's navigating the perilous streets of Paris, where the drivers seem intent on vehicular manslaughter, or attempting not to order unappetising delicacies in a German restaurant, Bryson's commentary is both engaging and insightful. Despite encountering occasional pitfalls, such as being robbed in Florence or window-shopping in Hamburg's notorious Reeperbahn, his love for travel and curiosity about the world shine through.

Blending travel anecdotes with historical context, Bryson paints a rich and amusing picture of Europe's diverse landscapes and vibrant communities. From the breathtaking fjords of Norway to the charming cobbled streets of Brussels, his journey offers a unique tapestry of experiences that range from the hilariously absurd to the poignantly reflective.

Fans of Bryson's first travel book, The Lost Continent, will find Neither Here, Nor There an equally delightful follow-up. Readers are treated to Bryson's trademark blend of sharp wit, keen observation, and a knack for finding the humour in almost any situation. With his fluent command of at least one language, Bryson embarks on this European odyssey that is both a tribute to his youthful adventures and an exploration of how much (or how little) has changed over time.

Whether you're an avid traveller or content armchair explorer, Neither Here, Nor There offers a captivating and comedic exploration of Europe that will leave you itching to pack your bags—or at least laughing out loud. Join Bill Bryson as he makes the familiar strange, the unfamiliar entertaining, and every step of the journey a delightful experience.
