Years ago, exasperated by his overbearing mother's attempts to find him a man, filmmaker Sam Goldstein made her a promise that if he wasn't married by thirty-five, she could control his dating life.

Now, on the eve of his thirty-fifth birthday, heartbroken after the breakup of his relationship with buttoned-up lawyer Paul, Sam Goldstein realises that his life in New York City is not exactly what he thought it would be. Worse still, his mother is arriving to make good on the promise she made him all those years ago.

Sam decides to agree to his mother's plan—on one condition. If by the end of the year his mother has not found a suitable partner for him, she must agree to stay out of Sam's romantic life for good and accept whomever Sam decides he wants to be with.

He lives on the Upper Eastside in New York City and in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He has an MFA in writing and is a professor in Global Liberal Studies at New York University.
He grew up tearing the covers off the romance novels he devoured so he wouldn’t get teased at school. Now he enjoys traveling the world with his husband of over twenty years and would never consider defacing any of the books he loves.
