Commissioned by the Royal Navy with the mission to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti and transport them to the West Indies, the crew of the Bounty found themselves in a tropical paradise. Under the command of the stern yet skilled Captain William Bligh, the ship set sail from Tahiti. However, discontent brewed amongst the men.
Led by the charismatic and determined Fletcher Christian, the mutineers staged a revolt shortly after leaving Tahiti. They set Captain Bligh and 18 loyalists adrift in a small, open boat, thrusting them into the vast and unforgiving ocean. In a remarkable testament to human endurance and ingenuity, Bligh navigated the tiny vessel over 3,618 nautical miles to the safety of Timor, showcasing incredible seamanship.
Meanwhile, Christian and the mutineers returned to Tahiti, where most chose to stay and face the consequences of their actions. Yet, Christian, along with eight fellow mutineers and several Tahitian men and women, ventured into uncharted waters. Their voyage ultimately brought them to the remote and uninhabited Pitcairn Island, a place so isolated it didn't even appear on British maps at the time. It was here that they established a new life, far removed from the reach of British justice.
Peter FitzSimons masterfully captures the essence of this historical saga, from the initial mutiny and Bligh's incredible journey to safety, to the final settlement on Pitcairn Island. His richly detailed narrative brings to life the courage, resilience, and sheer audacity of both the mutineers and those who remained loyal to the crown. Peter FitzSimons AM is Australia's bestselling non-fiction writer, and for the past 38 years has also been a journalist and columnist with the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD and the SUN-HERALD.
He is the author of a number of highly successful books, including BREAKER MORANT, BURKE AND WILLS, MONASH'S MASTERPIECE, KOKODA, NED KELLY and GALLIPOLI, as well as biographies of such notable Australians as Sir Douglas Mawson, Nancy Wake and John Eales. His passion is to tell Australian stories, our own stories: of great men and women, of stirring events in our history. Peter grew up on a farm north of Sydney, went to boarding school in Sydney and attended Sydney University.
