Modern Mending by Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald is a transformative book that invites you to breathe new life into your cherished but worn-out clothes. This engaging and practical guide demystifies the art of mending and embraces the principles of slow fashion, aiming to reduce waste and promote sustainability in our everyday lives.

Each year in Australia, millions of tonnes of clothing end up in landfill, contributing to a significant environmental impact. Australians, in particular, have one of the highest clothing consumption rates in the world. However, mending is experiencing a resurgence, becoming a trendy and eco-friendly alternative to simply discarding damaged garments. With Modern Mending, you'll discover how enjoyable and fulfilling it can be to repair and transform your favourite pieces.

Inspired by the global slow fashion movement, Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald provides a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to mending. Her book covers a wide range of techniques that are easy to follow, offering something for everyone—from beginners to seasoned sewing enthusiasts. Through detailed instructions, vivid photographs, and expert tips, you will learn various mending methods, including stitching, darning, patching, needle felting, and machine darning.

Erin's approach is infused with creativity and sustainability. She encourages readers to view mending not just as a practical skill, but as a form of personal expression. By reviving old clothes with unique fixes and patches, you can create one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect your individual style while also contributing to the greater good.

Next time you discover a tear in your favourite jeans or a hole in your beloved jumper, think twice before relegating them to the bin. Modern Mending equips you with the knowledge, techniques, and confidence needed to make your garments last longer and rebel against the fast fashion industry. Through mending, you can cultivate a wardrobe that is not only stylish but also sustainable, supporting a more eco-conscious lifestyle.

Embrace the joy of repairing and reinventing your clothing with Modern Mending. This book is an essential addition to the library of anyone interested in sustainability, fashion, and creative DIY projects.

About the Author

Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald is Australia's leading clothes-mending practitioner. Her mending has been displayed in art exhibitions in Melbourne and Adelaide and she teaches workshops across Australia. Erin began her career in journalism at 15 and over two decades worked as an editor, sub-editor, writer, and photographer. After leaving journalism she founded Bright Sparks, a social enterprise that repaired and reused electrical appliances to keep them out of landfill. When she's not trying to save the planet (stylishly), you can find her making tiny dioramas for her magic letterbox or cooking up a storm for her cookbook club, the Ottolenghi Appreciation Society. Her retirement dream is to run a deluxe toy hospital for stuffed toys. You can find her online at erinlewisfitzgerald.com and modernmending.com
