Manila by Night

A Queer Film Classic
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Manila by Night is a Queer film classic directed by Ishmael Bernal in 1980, portraying a dozen characters from Manila's vibrant yet gritty underworld as they navigate life, love, and pleasure. Inspired by Robert Altman's Nashville, the filmโ€™s multi-narrative style reflects the complexities of urban life. Despite winning Best Picture from the Filipino Film Critics, the film was banned under the Marcos regime for its candid depiction of Manila. It was only released years later, marking a shift in the nation's political climate. Joel Davidโ€™s book delves into the filmโ€™s cultural, political, and historical significance.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

A Queer Film Classic on Ishmael Bernal's 1980 film that follows a dozen characters, all denizens of Manila's sordid yet exuberant underworld, as they pursue life, love, and pleasure. Bernal cited Robert Altman's Nashville as one of the influences on his epic, multi-narrative approach to cinema. Manila by Night ultimately won the Best Picture award from the Filipino Film Critics.

Upon completion, the film was banned in the Philippines by the tyrannical Marcos regime for its "unsavoury" depiction of life in the Philippine capital. This started an arduous journey through repression and censorship before finally being released by the government as proof of its more tolerant policies on the eve of the "People's Power" uprising of 1986.

David's book explores the political, cultural, and historical ramifications of this important film.
