Illegitimate Power

Bastards in Renaissance Drama
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Illegitimate Power explores the figure of the bastard in Renaissance drama, revealing how these characters disrupt and challenge patriarchal authority. Alison Findlay examines a variety of early modern plays, linking illegitimacy to wider social and spiritual anxieties such as witchcraft, family unrest, and state crises. The book considers diverse representations of bastardsβ€”from villainous and comic figures to heroic onesβ€”who question accepted social norms. The concluding chapter focuses on their role in theatrical performance, arguing that these illegitimate voices confront traditional authority and invite new interpretations of the text.

Drawing on a wide rage of play texts, Alison Findlay shows how illegitimacy encoded and threatened to deconstruct some of the basic tenets of patriarchal rule. She considers bastards as indicators and instigators of crises in early modern England.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In Renaissance Drama, the bastard is an extraordinarily powerful and disruptive figure. We have only to think of Caliban or of Edmund to realise the challenge presented by the illegitimate child.

Drawing on a wide range of play texts, Alison Findlay shows how illegitimacy encoded and threatened to deconstruct some of the basic tenets of patriarchal rule. She considers bastards as indicators and instigators of crises in early modern England, reading them in relation to witchcraft, spiritual insecurities, and social unrest in family and State.

The characters discussed range from demi-devils, unnatural villains, and clowns to outstanding heroic or virtuous types who challenge officially sanctioned ideas of illegitimacy. The final chapter of the book considers bastards in performance; their relationship with theatre spaces and audiences.

Illegitimate Power argues that illegitimate voices can bring about the death of the author/father and open the text as a piece of theatre, challenging accepted notions of authority.
