Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Hypnotwist by Eisner Award-winner Gilbert Hernandez presents two graphic novellas in a unique dual-sided format. The first, a wordless comic, follows B-movie actress Fritz on a surreal journey involving motherhood, alcoholism, and sinister figures after she dons glittery pumps. The second, Scarlet by Starlight, blends Star Trek with Heart of Darkness, exploring violent conflicts between scientists and the catlike humanoid Scarlet, challenging ideas of civilisation and savagery.

Both stories are uncensored and unabridged, including 15 pages of previously unpublished material, and form a captivating double feature ideal for Love and Rockets collectors.

"Collects (and expands!) the graphic novellas 'Hypnotwist' and 'Scarlet by Starlight' from Love and rockets: new stories"--

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The Eisner Award-winning creator Gilbert Hernandez returns with another instalment in the Fritz B-film series! In the wordless comic/silent movie Hypnotwist, B-movie actress Fritz plays a character who doesn't seem to be going anywhere—until she puts on a pair of glittery pumps. Her wanderings become increasingly surreal as she confronts motherhood, alcoholism, a sinister smiley face, cruelty, and her worst fate. Uncensored (and unabridged) for the first time!

Scarlet by Starlight is a story that's Star Trek meets Heart of Darkness. Scientists, or colonisers, are doing research, surrounded by "primitive" fauna they affectionately nickname or treat like pests. Fritz plays Scarlet, a peaceful, catlike humanoid with a mate and children. When she becomes infatuated with one of the scientists, the fragile web of relationships explodes into violence and death, calling into question who the "advanced, civilised" creatures really are. Not for the faint of heart!

The two graphic novellas that comprise the book will be published in a unique "dual-sided" format with two covers, so each story ends in the book's middle (with the one you're not reading being upside down). This very cool, handsome "Double Feature" package will be an essential item for Love and Rockets collectors! Includes 15 pages of previously unpublished, additional material.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Critics praise Hypnotwist as a dark, evocative, and compelling work blending pulp genres with surreal horror and sci-fi elements. The Slings & Arrows calls it a perfect pastiche of revered genres, while Grovel lauds its brutal, intelligent storytelling with magical horror twists. Punk Globe describes it as savage, sexy, and sophisticated, and The A.V. Club compares Hernandez to David Lynch for his expressive, strange narratives. The New York Times Book Review names Hernandez a great craftsman of modern comics, and Publishers Weekly notes the collection’s intense and hard-to-put-down quality.

About the Author

Gilbert Hernandez was born in 1957 in Oxnard, California, and is considered one of the greatest living comics writer-artists in the world. In 1982, Hernandez co-created, along with his brothers Mario and Jaime, the ongoing, iconic, internationally acclaimed comic book series Love and Rockets, one of the greatest bodies of work the medium has ever seen. In addition to his work on Love and Rockets, its spinoffs, and side series, Hernandez has released a prodigious amount of original graphic novels and miniseries, such as Sloth, Bumperhead, and Marble Season. He also collaborated with Darwyn Cooke on The Twilight Children for DC. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2017 and is the recipient of a Fellow Award from United States Artists and a PEN Center USA's Graphic Literature Award for Outstanding Body of Work. Hernandez lives in Ventura, CA, with his wife and daughter.

Collecting the first five issues of Gilbert Hernandez's comic book series Blubber, this collection is an absurdly X-rated showcase for the most surreally transgressive of Hernandez's short stories.
