Heavenly Torah

As Refracted through the Generations
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Heavenly Torah presents Abraham Joshua Heschel's profound exploration of Rabbinic Judaism, highlighting a fundamental divide between the schools of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Ishmael. This division reflects a deep polarity within Judaism, encompassing themes of immanence versus transcendence, mysticism versus rationalism, and neo-Platonism versus Aristotelianism. Heschel uses these theological frameworks to interpret core topics in Judaism, drawing from his extensive scholarship across biblical studies, rabbinics, medieval Jewish philosophy, Hasidism, and mysticism.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Known most widely for his role in the civil rights and peace movements of the 1960s, Abraham Joshua Heschel made major scholarly contributions to the fields of biblical studies, rabbinics, medieval Jewish philosophy, Hasidism, and mysticism. Yet his most ambitious scholarly achievement, his three-volume study of Rabbinic Judaism, is only now appearing in English.

Heschel's great insight is that the world of rabbinic thought can be divided into two types or schools, those of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Ishmael, and that the historic disputes between the two are based on fundamental differences over the nature of revelation and religion. Furthermore, this disagreement constitutes a basic and necessary ongoing polarity within Judaism between immanence and transcendence, mysticism and rationalism, neo-Platonism and Aristotelianism.

Heschel then goes on to show how these two fundamental theologies of revelation may be used to interpret a great number of topics central to Judaism. Heavenly Torah by Abraham Joshua Heschel offers profound insights into these diverse interpretations.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Reviewers regard "Heavenly Torah" as perhaps Heschel's masterpiece, praising its clear and idiomatic English translation from the original Hebrew. The work is noted for its anthology-like quality, encompassing vast classical Jewish literature to illuminate the dualistic theological debate. Critics appreciate Heschel's balanced exposition, articulating both mystical and rational aspects of Torah, while the scholarly efforts of Gordon Tucker and Leonard Levin in assembling the English edition are highly commended.
