Hans Josephsohn
Hans Josephsohn, born in 1920 in Eastern Prussia to Jewish parents, was a Swiss artist renowned as one of the great masters of sculpture in the latter half of the 20th century. He left Germany in 1937 to study art in Florence but was forced to relocate to Switzerland due to fascist racial laws. Switzerland then became his adoptive country.
Josephsohn's work is often described as "existential sculpture", emerging during a time marked by the physical and moral devastation of World War II. He developed a unique language through his art, exploring the fragile connection between humanity and the surrounding world. Throughout his life, he focused on representing human beings as figures in space.
His sculptures are distinguished by their ambivalence, presenting almost abstract figures whose individuality is defined by their form, material, and surface.
