Strategies of Playful Resistance Within the Consumer Society
Guy Ben Ner: We've Lost (Bilingual edition) explores how Guy Ben Ner creates rich narratives and engaging artworks with minimal resources by incorporating himself and his personal environment into his works. His family's Tel Aviv apartment and the aisles of a furniture store become settings for his video art, where the complex influences of economics and politics on intimate human relationships are revealed.
In discussions with his close friend and fellow artist Christian Jankowski, Ben Ner shares insights into his creative process. Although his scenes may appear spontaneous, they are the product of months of research and a deep familiarity with film history. This juxtaposition of apparent improvisation and meticulously planned artistic concepts is a hallmark of his work.
Curator Fanni Fetzer, using concepts like "aesthetics," "fantasy," "family," and "citation," curates an alphabet of resistance as seen in Ben Ner's body of work. This publication, therefore, aims to highlight his distinct political perspectives and strategy of playful resistance.
