German Expressionism
German Expressionism by Meike Hoffmann and Christiane Remm explores the artist group Brücke, whose work feels particularly relevant in a time where a young generation seeks to change our way of living, thinking and organising. These young artists aimed to renew art and life in the German Imperial Empire and have continually inspired younger generations of artists.
Through bright paintings, simplified forms, and large fields of colour, they expressed feelings rather than external reality. The group was deeply interested in themes such as the connection between man and nature, the naked body, portraits and self-portraits, and the merging of life and art within the bustling metropolis of Berlin. The catalogue explores contemporary perceptions and responses to challenging topics, such as inspiration from African and Oceanian colonial cultural objects and the portrayal of very young female models.
Artists featured in this work include Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.
