An unforgettable coming-of-age story, Free by Lea Ypi explores the profound meanings of freedom—personal, collective, and political—through the eyes of a young girl growing up in one of the most isolated countries on earth. Albania, where communist ideals replaced religion, stood as the last Stalinist stronghold in Europe, virtually impossible to visit or leave. It was a land of scarcity and surveillance, of political executions and secret police. Yet, for Lea, it was home. It was a place where people were equal, neighbours looked out for each other, and children were nurtured to build a better world. There was a deep sense of community and hope.

Then, in December 1990, everything changed. Overnight, there were seismic shifts as statues of Stalin and Hoxha were toppled. Suddenly, people could vote freely, wear what they liked, and worship as they wished without fearing prying ears. However, the promise of newfound freedoms was quickly marred by chaos. Factories shut down, jobs evaporated, and thousands fled to Italy aboard crowded ships—only to be sent back. The collapse of predatory pyramid schemes financially crippled the country, spiralling it into violent conflict. As the aspirations of one generation became the disillusionment of another, and as secrets within her own family were laid bare, Lea found herself questioning the true essence of freedom.

Free is an engrossing memoir set against the backdrop of dramatic political upheaval. With acute insight and wit, Lea Ypi traces the limits of progress and the relentless burden of the past, illuminating the chasm between ideals and reality. Her narrative brings to light the hopes and fears of the people swept up by the unstoppable tide of history.
