Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
This authoritative edition brings together five seminal Elizabethan revenge tragedies by Thomas Middleton, William Shakespeare, John Marston, Thomas Kyd, and Henry Chettle. Set against the backdrop of political corruption and religious anxiety during the transition from Elizabeth I to James I, these plays delve into death, power abuses, and vigilante justice. The collection includes Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, Shakespeare's psychologically rich 1603 Hamlet, Chettle's reworking of Hamlet themes in The Tragedy of Hoffman, Marston's bloodthirsty Antonio's Revenge, and Middleton's savage satire The Revenger's Tragedy.

Editor Emma Smith provides an insightful introduction covering the political, religious, and theatrical contexts, accompanied by a chronology, biographies, and further reading suggestions.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

A new and authoritative edition of five seminal revenge tragedies, edited by Emma Smith.

As the Elizabethan era gave way to the reign of James I, England grappled with corruption within the royal court and widespread religious anxiety. Dramatists responded with morally complex plays of dark wit and violent spectacle, exploring the nature of death, the abuse of power, and vigilante justice.

In Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, a father failed by the Spanish court seeks his own bloody retribution for his son's murder. Shakespeare's 1603 version of Hamlet creates an avenging Prince of unique psychological depth, while Chettle's The Tragedy of Hoffman is a fascinating reworking of Hamlet's themes, probably for a rival theatre company. In Marston's Antonio's Revenge, thwarted love leads inexorably to gory reprisals. In Middleton's The Revenger's Tragedy, malcontent Vindice unleashes an escalating orgy of mayhem on a debauched Duke for his bride's murder, in a ferocious satire reflecting the mounting disillusionment of the age.

Emma Smith's introduction considers the political and religious climate behind the plays and the dramatic conventions within them. This edition includes a chronology, playwrights' biographies, and suggestions for further reading.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Five Revenge Tragedies offers affordable and accessible editions of core revenge drama texts, with Emma Smith's introduction both scholarly and engaging. Praised by Gabriel A Rieger, Assistant Professor at Concord University, it is especially valuable for undergraduate and graduate students exploring this genre. This volume is a long-overdue and welcome addition to Penguin's catalogue.

  • Four Revenge Tragedies
Francis Bacon described revenge as a β€˜kind of wild justice’. Then as now, early modern playwrights and their theatre-going public were fascinated by the anarchic energies that a desire for retribution unleashes. Rather than rehearsing familiar conventions, each of these plays presents a unique social and cultural milieu where dark fantasies of revenge are variously played out. In Kyd’s The...

  • A Chaste Maid in Cheapside
Written for the adult players at the open-air Swan theatre in 1613, this masterpiece of Jacobean city comedy signals its ironic nature even in the title: chaste maids, like most other goods and people in London's busiest commercial area, are likely to be fake.
