Faculty of Murder introduces Mother Paul, June Wright's beloved nun-detective, who returns to her sleuthing ways after taking up a new position as warden of a student hall of residence at the University of Melbourne.

Upon her arrival on campus, Judith Mornane startles her fellow residents by announcing her intention to uncover the truth behind her sister's murder, who disappeared from the same dormitory a year earlier. The ever-curious Mother Paul is drawn into the mystery of what happened to Judith's sister. Did she simply run off for reasons best known to herself, as the police concluded, or was she truly murdered?

Mother Paul speculates that her disappearance could be linked to another tragedy that occurred around the same time—the accidental drowning of the wife of one of the college's professors. Could this drowning have been as accidental as the official investigation suggested?

Convinced that the two events are somehow connected, Mother Paul becomes even more determined after another tragedy: the faked-suicide death of one of her student charges. It becomes clear to her that a particularly cruel and clever murderer is still active within the college.

Not above using a little subterfuge in the interest of discovering the truth, Mother Paul maneuvers her colleagues, the students, and even the police like pieces on a chessboard. Amidst high drama, the murderer is finally revealed.
