Titled Exposition Générale, the opening exhibition will showcase the unique identity of the Fondation Cartier and its programming through an extensive journey into the works of its Collection.
The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain
Ever since its creation in 1984, the Fondation Cartier's core mission has always been to offer artists a space of freedom and creation, with the aim of showcasing and promoting their work. Driven by this vision, the Fondation Cartier soon started building up a Collection of works from the exhibitions which were presented in France and abroad.
A reflection of the Fondation Cartier's history, this Collection stands out for its diversity and eclecticism, bringing together close to 4,000 pieces by more than 500 photographers, painters, sculptors, designers, movie directors, and architects from all over the world. As a living memory, it embodies the artists' aesthetic and intellectual adventure, as well as the diversity of disciplines that the Fondation Cartier explores in its programming.
It also illustrates the Fondation Cartier's cosmopolitan approach, open to all forms of innovative and singular otherness, with works signed by both renowned artists and emerging talents.
The Opening Exhibition
In October 2025, the Fondation Cartier will inaugurate its new space at 2, place du Palais-Royal in Paris, with interior architecture designed by Jean Nouvel, with an important exhibition dedicated to its Collection. Titled Exposition Générale, in reference to the history of this building, which successively housed the Grand Hôtel du Louvre, built to welcome visitors to the 1855 Universal Exhibition, the Grands Magasins du Louvre and then the Louvre des Antiquaires, this exhibition will bring together nearly 500 works by 90 artists from this Collection.
Designed by the FormaFantasma studio, it will display the unique identity of the Fondation Cartier and allow visitors to discover this extraordinary Collection which explores the multiple forms of contemporary creation.
The Exhibition Catalogue
Conceived as an extension of the visit, the catalogue will offer an in-depth look at this historic exhibition on the Fondation Cartier Collection. Richly illustrated and documented, it will constitute a reference book on the art pieces presented in the show, while highlighting the profound and continuous connections that have been existing between the Fondation Cartier and the artists for more than 40 years.
