DAILY MAIL BOOK OF THE WEEK

Soon to be an AppleTV+ series, this is the definitive account of how Enzo Ferrari became the master of motor racing and one of the most complex, important, and imposing figures of the 20th century.

Enzo Ferrari by Luca Dal Monte is an exhaustive narrative that paints a vivid portrait of one of motor racing's most formidable icons. Delving deep into the life of Enzo Ferrari, this biography reveals the man behind the myth, from his humble beginnings in Modena, Italy, to his reign as the founder and driving force behind the legendary Ferrari brand.

The book meticulously chronicles Ferrari's early days as a race car driver, illustrating his relentless drive for success and unquenchable thirst for victory. It traverses his tumultuous journey through World War II, detailing his controversial interactions with the Italian Fascist government and post-war engagements with Communist leaders. These encounters, set against the backdrop of a Europe in turmoil, provide a profound understanding of the socio-political influences that shaped Ferrari’s ambitions and his company.

Dal Monte's work stands out for its thorough research and unprecedented access to primary sources, drawing from previously unpublished documents and interviews conducted both in Italy and abroad. The narrative is enriched by fascinating insights into Ferrari's personal and professional life, shedding light on lesser-known aspects of his character and business dealings.

Readers will learn how Ferrari revolutionized the automobile industry, not only by pushing the technical limits of car manufacturing but also by creating an empire synonymous with excellence and innovation. He was known for pushing his drivers to the brink of disaster, demanding the absolute best from them, sometimes at great personal cost. The book also explores Ferrari's complex personality, including his struggles with family and internal company conflicts, which he managed to overcome on his steady rise to greatness.

Enzo Ferrari is more than just a biography; it is a comprehensive study of a man whose life's work influenced generations of automotive design and racing legends. Luca Dal Monte's vivid storytelling and rigorous attention to detail make this a must-read for any car enthusiast or anyone intrigued by the life of one of the 20th century’s most enigmatic figures.
