Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Empire's Children by Patricia Weerakoon tells the story of Shiro, the daughter of a native tea-maker, who defies the class distinctions entrenched in the tea plantation life of Sri Lanka. With dreams of becoming a missionary doctor, Shiro wishes only for the freedom to play with her best friend, Lakshmi, despite the latter being a coolie labourer.

Into their world step Anthony Ashley Cooper and his brother William, heirs to the tea plantations. From childhood, the brothers have been taught to disdain Sri-Lankan natives, viewing labourers merely as tools for personal gain and company profit.

Will Shiro's aspirations be fulfilled, or will obstacles stand in her path? Can Lakshmi transcend the limitations of her societal status? And will Anthony and William ever acknowledge the true worth of those around them?
