Dictators Without Borders

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Dictators Without Borders offers a penetrating look into the unrecognised and unregulated links between autocratic regimes in Central Asia and centres of power and wealth throughout the West.

Weak, corrupt, and politically unstable, the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan are often dismissed as isolated and irrelevant to the outside world. But are they really? This hard-hitting book argues that Central Asia is, in reality, a leader in globalisation, with extensive involvement in economics, politics, and security dynamics beyond its borders. Yet, Central Asia’s international activities are mostly hidden from view, with disturbing implications for world security.

Based on years of research and involvement in the region, Alexander Cooley and John Heathershaw reveal how business networks, elite bank accounts, overseas courts, third-party brokers, and Western lawyers connect Central Asia’s supposedly isolated leaders with global power centres. The authors also uncover widespread Western participation in money laundering, bribery, foreign lobbying by autocratic governments, and the exploitation of legal loopholes within Central Asia.

Riveting and important, Dictators Without Borders exposes the global connections of a troubled region that must no longer be ignored.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Dictators Without Borders offers an insightful exploration into the political dynamics of Central Asia's post-Soviet states, highlighting the international networks that support grand corruption. The book is lauded for its comprehensive analysis and ability to link local politics with global financial systems, showing how these connections sustain dictatorial regimes. It's recommended for readers interested in understanding both regional power dynamics and the role of Western complicity in this process.
