Contractualism/Contractarianism collects, for the first time, both major classical sources and central contemporary discussions of these important approaches to philosophical ethics. Edited and introduced by Stephen Darwall, these readings are essential for anyone interested in normative ethics.
Contractarianism / Contractualism explores a major approach to normative ethical theory that emphasises reciprocity and mutual consent.
'Contractarianism' refers to the concept, first introduced by Thomas Hobbes, in which morality is viewed as a set of social practices adopted by self-interested rational actors in their common interest, akin to a contract.
'Contractualism', meanwhile, is a related but distinct idea, originating in the thoughts of Rousseau and Kant, where morality consists of principles that mediate relations of mutual respect between free and equal individuals.
In both theories, morality is modelled on an agreement or contract. The difference lies in the underlying motivation: contractarians believe it is rational self-interest, while contractualists hold that it is mutual respect between equals.
Contractarianism / Contractualism brings together for the first time both major classical sources and central contemporary discussions on these significant approaches to philosophical ethics. Alongside the works of Hobbes, Rousseau, and Kant, it features contributions from David Gauthier, Gilbert Harman, John Rawls, T. M. Scanlon, and Gary Watson.
Edited and introduced by Stephen Darwall, these readings are essential for anyone with an interest in normative ethics.
