Twists, turns, and surprises await 4 friends as they form their new chess club (and make it through school).
Twists, turns, and surprises await 4 friends as they form their new chess club (and make it through middle school).
Chess Club: The Winning Move by Rebecca Donnelly is centred around Halima Kasim, a young chess enthusiast whose favourite thing in the world is the game of chess. However, in her small town with no local chess club, she struggles to find offline practice partners.
Yearning for worthy opponents in real life, Halima recruits a group of beginners: her next-door BFF Jem, a dedicated friend grappling with the recent loss of her grandfather; Jem's long-lost friend, Parker, who is eager to escape the shadow of his sports-star siblings; and Daniel, who is itching for answers after discovering a mysterious note left for him inside a book.
Together, they form their own chess club, navigating not just the chessboard but also the highs and lows of middle school social life. Throughout their journey, they learn that it takes more than mere practice to be great—it requires teamwork, confidence, and the power of friendship. And never forget, chess is a game full of surprises.
