Celebrity Politics

Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Celebrity Politics by Mark Wheeler provides the first comprehensive analysis of the history, nature, and global impact of celebrity politics today. The book explores how celebrity politicians and politicised celebrities have transformed political practices and communication, leading to new forms of political participation. It examines how political actors have adopted celebrity culture and the role of celebrity activists, endorsers, humanitarians, and diplomats in reshaping a fragmented, image-driven public arena. Wheeler offers a nuanced critique of celebrity in politics, defining both celebrity politicians and politicised stars by their ability to engage affectively within the public sphere.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In this new book, Mark Wheeler offers the first in-depth analysis of the history, nature and global reach of celebrity politics today.

Celebrity politicians and politicised celebrities have had a profound impact upon the practice of politics and the way in which it is now communicated. New forms of political participation have emerged as a result, and the political classes have increasingly absorbed the values of celebrity into their own PR strategies. Celebrity activists, endorsers, humanitarians and diplomats also play a part in reconfiguring politics for a more fragmented and image-conscious public arena.

In academic circles, celebrity may be viewed as a โ€˜manufactured productโ€™; one fabricated by media exposure so that celebrity activists are no more than โ€˜bards of the powerful.โ€™ Mark Wheeler, however, provides a more nuanced critique contending that both celebrity politicians and politicised stars should be defined by their โ€˜affective capacityโ€™ to operate within the public sphere.

This timely book will be a valuable resource for students of media and communication studies and political science, as well as general readers keen to understand the nature and reach of contemporary celebrity culture.
