Diane Hess is a New York writer with extensive experience covering small business and entrepreneurial stories for publications such as Crain's New York Business, Dow Jones and the New York Post. After years of in-depth reporting on the personalities, challenges and triumphs that define New York City’s small business landscape, Diane brings an informed, insider’s perspective to every story in Behind the Counter.

Alan Benson’s photography reflects a deep passion for people, travel and food. For more than two decades, he has captured compelling images that blend authenticity with artistry. A former chef in London, Benson transformed his culinary background into a celebrated photography career. He has contributed to over 50 books, including Cooking Slow, EAT NYC, Sesame, and Salata, and his work appears widely in magazines across the globe.
