On Tyranny
History does not repeat, but it does instruct. European history shows us that societies can break, democracies can fall, ethics can collapse, and people can find themselves in unimaginable circumstances. Today, we are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to totalitarianism in the twentieth century. This book deals with this topic.
A controversial, timely intervention in world affairs from one of the most acclaimed historians of the twentieth century

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
As Rachel Maddow succinctly puts it, this book is "a sort of survival book, a sort of symptom-diagnosis manual in terms of losing your democracy and what tyranny and authoritarianism look like up close." The Observer echoes this sentiment by describing it as "a brief primer in every important thing we might have learned from the history of the last century, and all that we appear to have forgotten."
Snyder, one of the most acclaimed historians of the twentieth century, challenges us with an important reminder: "History does not repeat, but it does instruct." He delves into the historical precedents of the twentieth century, where European democracies fell prey to the dark regimes of fascism, Nazism, and communism. During these turbulent times, charismatic leaders and political parties claimed to represent the people's voice, offered protection from supposed global threats, and replaced reason with myth.
On Tyranny illustrates that European history serves as both a familiarisation and a warning. It shows that societies can fracture, democracies can crumble, ethics can disintegrate, and ordinary citizens can find themselves in unthinkable situations. Snyder argues that today's political environment is dangerously reminiscent of those periods when democracy gave way to totalitarianism. However, unlike our predecessors, we have the advantage of hindsight. By learning from their experiences, we can recognize the signs of tyranny and take decisive action to prevent its rise.
The urgent message of On Tyranny could not be more timely. Snyder's work is a clarion call to remain aware and informed, to take proactive steps in defence of freedom, and to understand that the fight for democracy is ongoing. He provides readers with specific and practical advice, grounded in historical context, on how to resist encroaching authoritarianism. The book serves as an essential read for anyone concerned about the future of democratic society in our increasingly complex and volatile world.
Ultimately, On Tyranny is both a warning and a guide, urging us to learn from the past to preserve our democratic institutions and freedoms today. Now is indeed a good time to heed its lessons and commit to active resistance against the forces of tyranny.
