Armies of the Irish Rebellion 1798 by Stuart Reid explores the dramatic events of 1798 when the Irish rose up against the corrupt English government in Dublin.
In a united effort, both Protestants and Catholics joined forces, causing the rebellion to quickly spread across the country. Armed mostly with pikes, the Irish peasantry were able to overwhelm several small, isolated British outposts. Despite their efforts and the half-hearted assistance of the French, the Irish forces were ultimately no match for the organised ranks of the British Army when led by competent commanders.
The Redcoats brutally turned the tide, resulting in a devastating loss for the Irish. Within just three months, between 15,000 and 30,000 people lost their lives, the majority of whom were Irish.
This book not only recounts the chilling events and the harsh realities of this fascinating period in Irish history but also delves into the organisation and uniforms of the forces involved. Discover the story behind this significant conflict and the tumultuous times that shaped Irish history.
