Kia Kaha
Kia Kaha
Kia Kaha is an award-winning and powerful illustrated storybook that invites tamariki (children) and rangatahi (youth) of Aotearoa (New Zealand) to celebrate Māoritanga (Māori culture). This heartfelt collection shines a light on the true stories of incredible Māori individuals who have made a remarkable impact in their respective fields.
Written by Stacey Morrison and Jeremy Sherlock, Kia Kaha beautifully illustrates the journeys of these trailblazers through the stunning artwork of various talented illustrators, including Akoni Pakinga, Haylee Ngaroma, Isobel Joy Te Aho-White, Jess Thompson (Maori Mermaid), Josh Morgan, Kurawaka Productions, Miriama Grace-Smith, Ngaumutane Jones (Ms Meemo), Reweti Arapete, Taupuruariki Whakataka-Brightwell, Xoe Hall, and Zak Waipara. Each illustrator brings their unique perspective and style to the stories, enriching the reader's experience.
This pukapuka (book) introduces readers to historic and contemporary figures who have achieved milestones in diverse areas such as land rights, language revival, hip hop, and contemporary Māori fashion design. Through these stories, young readers are encouraged to recognise their kura huna (special gifts), understanding that they, too, can make a difference in the world.
Featuring narratives that inspire aroha (love), whanaungatanga (kinship), and a hopeful vision for the future, Kia Kaha serves as a beacon of strength and perseverance. It is a celebration of identity, heritage, and the extraordinary contributions of Māori to both their community and the wider world.
Bursting with vibrant illustrations and heartfelt storytelling, Kia Kaha is a must-read for all ages. It honours the spirit of determination and celebrates the power of standing strong—Kia kaha!

About the Author
Stacey Morrison (Te Arawa, Ngai Tahu) is a radio and TV broadcaster and author, and a mama to three tamariki who have been brought up with te reo Maori as their mother tongue. The recipient of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori Champion Award 2016, Stacey loves encouraging the learning and use of our country's beautiful native language. Stacey and her husband Scotty co-wrote Maori at Home to help other families use te reo in everyday settings, and Stacey's first children's book, My First Words in Maori, became a number-one bestseller. Jeremy Sherlock (Tainui, Ngati Awa) is the publisher behind the Morrisons' bestselling Maori Made Easy series. He has worked in New Zealand and Australia for Reed, Penguin and Penguin Random House, specialising in biography and memoir, sports, history, pop culture and all things Maoritanga. He currently lives and works in Tamaki Makaurau as a freelance publishing consultant and writer. Kia Kaha, a collaboration with Stacey, is his first book.
