What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami is an enchanting blend of memoir, travelogue, and philosophical contemplation, offering readers a rare glimpse into the mind of this internationally acclaimed novelist. This captivating narrative delves into Murakami's journey as a runner and how it intertwines with his life as a writer, exploring the profound impact running has had on his creative process and personal growth.

Murakami's story begins in 1982, when he decides to sell his jazz bar to fully immerse himself in writing. To maintain his physical fitness and mental clarity, he takes up running, embarking on a path that will lead him to complete marathons and ultramarathons across the globe. Just a year after taking up the sport, he finishes a solo run from Athens to Marathon, igniting a lifelong passion for distance running.

The book chronicles his extensive preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon, providing a window into his disciplined training regimen. Readers are transported to various settings that have influenced his running journey, from the tranquil Jingu Gaien gardens in Tokyo, where he once shared a course with an Olympian, to the serene banks of the Charles River in Boston.

Murakami's reflections in What I Talk About When I Talk About Running are equal parts poignant and amusing, offering insights into his thoughts on solitude, determination, and the transformative power of endurance. With a narrative that is by turns funny, sobering, playful, and profoundly philosophical, this memoir is a must-read not only for fans of Murakami's literary works but also for the growing community of athletes who find solace and fulfilment in long-distance running.

Renowned critics have lauded the book for its unique and inspirational perspective:
“There can never have been a book quite like this memoir of running and writing before. In its self-contained way, it's nothing less than an inspiration” - Evening Standard
“Hugely enjoyable...You don't have to have run a marathon to be captivated” - Sunday Telegraph
“Comical, charming and philosophical...an excellent memoir” - GQ

Additionally, readers can now explore Murakami's thoughts on his craft in his latest release, Novelist as a Vocation.

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running is an exquisite narrative that captures the delicate balance between disciplined training and the creative self, offering an inspiring testament to the intertwined nature of physical and creative endeavours.

About the Author

Haruki Murakami (Author) In 1978, Haruki Murakami was twenty-nine and running a jazz bar in downtown Tokyo. One April day, the impulse to write a novel came to him suddenly while watching a baseball game. That first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, won a new writers' award and was published the following year. More followed, including A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, but it was Norwegian Wood, published in 1987, that turned Murakami from a writer into a phenomenon. In works such as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, 1Q84, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and Men Without Women, Murakami's distinctive blend of the mysterious and the everyday, of melancholy and humour, continues to enchant readers, ensuring his place as one of the world's most acclaimed and well-loved writers. Philip Gabriel (Translator) Philip Gabriel is the author of Mad Wives and Island Dreams- Shimao Toshio and the Margins of Japanese Literature and Spirit Matters- The Transcendent in Modern Japanese Literature and has translated many novels and short stories by the writer Haruki Murakami and other modern writers. He is recipient of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese Literature (2001) for his translation of Senji Kuroi's Life in the Cul-de-Sac, and the 2006 PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize for his translation of Murakami's Kafka on the Shore.
