Revolt. She said. Revolt again by Alice Birch explores the language, behaviours, and societal forces shaping women in the 21st century. Through arresting vignettes and nameless characters, the play confronts the sexist clichΓ©s and conventions surrounding work, sex, motherhood, aging, and love. It challenges what holds women back from radical change and critiques the violence perpetuated by language throughout history. Originally performed in 2014 and later produced in New York, this edition includes commentary placing the play within contemporary feminist and political contexts.

Through a series of arresting vignettes and a collection of nameless characters, Alice Birch examines the language, behaviour and forces that shape women in the 21st century. The play asks what is stopping us from doing something truly radical to change them?

Written in response to the provocation that well-behaved women seldom make history, the play is an assault on the language that has fuelled violence against women throughout history.

Problematic language frequently attached to women is interrogated, from lazy sexist clichΓ©s to the conventions around a marriage proposal. By doing so, the play rails against the conventions of work, sex, motherhood, ageing and love.

Revolt. She said. Revolt again was first performed at the 2014 Midsummer Mischief Festival in Stratford-upon-Avon. It transferred to the Royal Court Upstairs and was more recently produced at New York's Soho Rep.

It is published here in a Student Edition alongside commentary and notes by Marissia Fragkou, who locates the play in our contemporary political and cultural context (including second- and third-wave feminism, and the #MeToo movement).

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

The Guardian praises Birch's work as an angry, frantic, and experimental feminist play that seeks revolutionary change by dismantling language and societal norms. It evokes the anarchic fury akin to powerful dramatic figures, questioning how women relate to men, society, and themselves. The play's linguistic complexity and relentless energy provoke deep reflection on entrenched social systems.
